Postal History. 1805. BRAZIL COLONIAL. Letter from Salvador da Bahia 15.11.1805, to London where it arrived on 25.2.1806, ”transported by hand to the care of Captain Birch of the Britannia”. In England it was delivered to the mail, where the Ship Letter London mark (Robson Lowe #645) was applied. An extraordinary account of a passenger on his voyage to India, passing through Madeira, the loss of two ships on Rock Island, the pursuit of a French ship, mail ready to be thrown overboard in case of seizure, arriving safely in Bahia, from where the letters go to London by the hand of Capt. Birch. One of the rare known letters sent from Brazil, at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
